Body
and mind
Don't just detox your
body,
says Tina Bexon it could
be time to clean out your
mind as well.
The
penchant for detoxing our bodies with juicing and fasting is rapidly gaining
momentum, not least amongst those of us with particularly stressful
and demanding jobs, which require an abundance of energy. (We are the ones
in the office who leap up in horror if anyone come within three feet of us
with a bag of crisps or can of coke.)
But haven't us carrot munchers forgotten
something?
What about the body and mind link, the
holistic approach to just about everything in the universe? Surely if
our bodies deserve that sense of lightness and purification, our minds do
too. Think of the extra energy to be gained from killing off those feelings
of inadequacy, anger, resentment and insecurity, which stress us out and
drain our resources just as a poor diet does.
"Many of us, including successful
professionals and high fliers, carry the toxic belief that we are not good
enough", stress management consultant Louise Smart explains to me in the
salubrious surroundings of the Landmark Hotel where she offers emotional
detox programmes to clients from blue chip companies and law firms.
"We try to compensate by over committing
to others demands at the expense of our own well being which prevents
us from making confident choices. It means we are constantly looking over
our shoulders for appraisal because we think it is self-centred and selfish
to value ourselves.
But we have to come from our own locus of control. The
energy of being true to yourself is very potent. It is fuelled with passion
and allows us to take risks." |
I'm intrigued. How does a detox work in practice?
It's an involved process and begins with relaxing the
client so they can get in touch with the emotion and the feeling quality of
the toxic belief in order to release it. This is done through something
called 'the feeling exercise'.
"That feeling, that emotion is energy in motion, but when
we hold on to it we feel discomfort. So I encourage clients to accept it and
approve of it so that it can then move on out of the body. Once the emotion
has passed, they are in a calm state and I encourage them to find out the
original cause for that feeling. This is often found in childhood when
difficult emotions are suppressed because children do not have the
mechanisms to deal with them."
It sounds a little like the talking cure, but differs in
one important respect. Many of the techniques are non-verbal because
as Louise explains talking does not actually shift anything, it just moves
things around like sweeping dust from one end of the room to the other, and
it keeps us in our heads rather than in the emotion.
The breathing exercises she uses enable clients to let go
of the toxicity in the lungs and the body due to stress. "You are also
letting go of the past as breathing brings you into the present. And when
you deeply relax you can go into alpha brainwave coherence, which is when
self-healing takes place. I will then use visualisation techniques to create
the image and emotions related to a positive self image."
The end result, she insists, is a feeling of lightness
and renewed energy. The emphasis is on self-empowerment so thankfully there
are no spiritual gurus to worship and show you 'the way', and the techniques
are provided so you can use them in your own time. "They must do them, they
will feel better, clearer, and in that clarity they often realise there is
something else that they want to deal with so they come back."
Louise Smart has been working as a stress management
consultant for nine years. She offers half day programmes in a private suite
at the Landmark Hotel and sessions from her practice in Harley Street.
